I’m currently co-curating, designing and producing an exhibition that takes a critical look at the visionary housing development of Village Homes in Davis, California, an example of sustainable and community living, energy efficiency and design, and a model for adapting to to-day’s climate crisis.
In 2025, Village Homes celebrates 50 years since breaking ground in 1975, looking back at five decades of sustainable living and community building. This unique housing development, designed and developed by Mike Corbett and Judith Corbett, is one of Davis’ most established and desirable neighborhoods. To mark the anniversary, the exhibition will be hosted at the University of California Davis Design Museum and the Village Homes Community Center.
Village Homes: A Radical Plan explores how the confluence of social and ecological movements of the 1960s and 70s were successfully harnessed by a small group of idealistic and dogged developers, city officials willing to challenge rules, and investors and homebuyers able to take some big financial risks. The original stakeholders sought to build a neighborhood that decreased environmental impact and increased social harmony.
The exhibition includes an introductory film; 3-d model of the site; original plans, maps and sketches; historic and contemporary photographs; ephemera; and original objects to document Village Home’s most notable characteristics.
